Axis for Autism Shares Tips to Help Kids with Autism Enjoy Halloween in Arizona Parenting

Traditional Halloween activities can be overwhelming for children with autism or sensory processing issues, but there are plenty of other ways parents can provide a fun experience. Arizona Parenting turned to Axis for Autism Clinical Director Morgan Hall for advice on how kids can participate and celebrate the holiday while avoiding overstimulation.

Morgan explained that simplicity is key, recommending parents focus on the activities they know their children will enjoy and skip or swap the rest. When trick-or-treating, she suggested creating a well-thought-out plan for the night to avoid any surprises, as well as sticking to normal routines.

Olivia Koenen, whose 5-year-old son Remi was diagnosed at Axis for Autism, advised parents to keep costumes simple, avoid homes with scary decorations and use alternative communication methods. Both she and Dr. Hall urged members of the community to show patience and kindness to trick-or-treaters who struggle with social communication.

A licensed neuropsychologist with more than 20 years of experience in emotional and behavioral development, Morgan spearheads Axis for Autism’s program development, evaluations and care coordination to help Arizona children and adults receive autism diagnoses.
